Rent Control May Be Coming Soon

Colorado HB Bill 21-1117 is headed to the full House for a vote. This bill would authorize local cities and counties to mandate rent-restrictions (rent control) on new units being built or redeveloped units without forcing the local city or county to actually help fund new affordable housing units. Instead the developer or builder or homeowner would be FORCED to offer reduced rents long-term on their property, thus reducing their property’s value and seriously harming their property ownership rights.

This is a great way to force developers and builders to NOT build any more new rental housing, thus causing rents to soar and making more people homeless. Good intentions almost always lead to bad policy. I encourage you to contact your House Member about this bill.
